MUSEUM OF MODERN MYTHOLOGY AND POP CULTURE
WESTERN AND PIONEER
Westerns often confront how more natural ways of life clash with modern technology and changes in society. American Western Lore of the first part of the 20th Century expressed, mostly, a sanitized version of history, emphasizing honor and sacrifice as character motivation. A more pessimistic, or realistic, depending upon your view, retelling began in the 1960s and 1970s, including the ignorance, intolerance, and brutality of those times. A stereotypical Western hero is the lone wanderer who rides into town, and stands up to the local outlaws. These characters, whether called 'Shane,' 'Annie Oakley,' 'The Man With No Name,' 'Calamity Jane,' 'Tonto,' or 'Zorro,' are descended from the Knights of King Arthur's time. Knights in (perhaps not so) shining armor that wandered the land and engaged the enemy in combat, just as Western heroes did, later. Real or imagined. |
