MUSEUM OF MODERN MYTHOLOGY AND POP CULTURE

TARZAN OF THE APES

1912. Created by author Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) in a series of fantastic novels, Tarzan's literary adventures far surpass anything from the movies, comics, radio, or TV. ERB's Ape-Man is a multi-linguistic, educated man who in an instant reverts to the feral ferocious beast he really is. The Ape-Man's first appearance was in the October 1912 issue of All-Story magazine. In 1914, A. C. McClurg published Tarzan of the Apes in book form. The first Tarzan film, Tarzan of the Apes, appeared in 1918 starring Elmo Lincoln. A surprisingly complex literary character, the media have diluted and repackaged him; his intellect is removed, as in the Weissmuller mold, or his super human strength and feral qualities are missing. The novels must be read in order to understand this Super-Human, and the whole saga, in the context of myth. Modern Mythology.
