FRANK SINATRA

1915-1998. Arguably the greatest singer of the 20th Century, Frank was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, the child of Italian immigrants. He began singing in public during the early 1930s, and by 1939, recorded his first song. He appeared in his first motion picture, Las Vegas Nights, in 1941. Distinguishing himself on radio, recordings, in nightclubs, and film, Frank won an Academy Award for his performance in the 1953 feature film From Here to Eternity. He later created his own recording label, Reprise Records, in the early 1960s. Along with Rat Pack members Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., Frank played a major role in desegregating Nevada casinos and hotels, and performed in many benefits for Martin Luther King Jr. He often spoke from the stage deriding racial prejudice, once angrily shouting, "There's only one race! The human race!" In 2008, the US Congress passed a resolution designating May 13 as Frank Sinatra Day, honoring his contribution to American culture.
