PATRICK McGOOHAN 1928-2009. Although born in Astoria, New York, McGoohan's family moved to Ireland when he was very young. He acted on stage before breaking into TV and movies during the 1950s. In 1959 he was named Best TV Actor of the year in Britain. Orson Welles, impressed by McGoohan's stage presence ("intimidated," Welles admitted), cast him as Starbuck in his York theatre production of Moby Dick Rehearsed. McGoohan starred in the TV series Danger Man playing spy John Drake, continuing as Drake in a 1960s expanded version titled, in the USA, Secret Agent. His complex, independent mind then created the cult TV mini-series The Prisoner. He intended this allegorical satire to have a thousand interpretations. McGoohan recieved a BAFTA award in 1960, and later two Emmy Awards as an actor in the Columbo TV series starring Peter Falk, also producing, writing and directing episodes. Peter Falk stated that McGoohan is his favorite villain from the show. |
