JOHN LENNON

1940-1980. John Winston Lennon, the founding member of the Beatles, was born in Liverpool, England during the Nazi bombing of Britian. Raised by his aunt Mimi, he was told at an early age, "The guitar's all very well as a hobby, John, but you'll never make a living out of it." John formed his first group, The Quarrymen, in 1956; by the next year, Paul McCartney had joined, followed in 1958 by George Harrison, who became lead guitarist. In 1962, Ringo Starr joined the group and the Fab Four recorded their first sessions at EMI Studios with George Martin producing. As the most daring, and innovative of the Beatles, John Lennon helped shape cultural and political agendas of the 1960s; after the incredible success of the band, the four went their own ways, and Lennon continued as a peace activist during the 1970s with his wife,Yoko Ono.
