LEE MARVIN

1924-1987. Born in New York City, Lee Marvin enlisted in the Marines at the beginning of World War II, and was wounded during the savage battle of Saipan in 1944. After the war, he became interested in becoming an actor, studied his craft, and made his Broadway debut in 1951 in a production of Billy Budd. By the 1960s, Lee's acting was attracting the notice of movie directors such as: John Ford, Richard Brooks, Stanley Kramer, and Don Siegel. Lee's Best Actor Academy Award came for his duel role in the western-comedy, Cat Ballou. He summed up his career, saying, "Ah, stardom. They put your name on a star in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard and you walk down and find a pile of dog manure on it. That tells the whole story, baby."
