JOCK MAHONEY 1919-1989. Stuntman, TV's Range Rider and Yancy Derringer, the movies' thirteenth Tarzan, this six foot four actor was born in Chicago, Illinois. After a stint as a pilot and instructor in the US Marines, Jock Mahoney became one of the top stuntmen in Hollywood, doing the tough stuff for stars such as: Gregory Peck, Errol Flynn, John Wayne, and Randolph Scott. Soon, he began acting in films and appeared in five Three Stooges comedies between 1947 and 1956. Mahoney branched into TV, becoming legendary for his athletic feats and inventiveness. After playing a villain in a 1960 Tarzan movie, Jocko was given the role of the Ape-Man in the next two adventures. He holds the record of being the oldest man to play Tarzan (plus, doing his own stunts). Active in films, TV, as a stunt advisor/coordinator, Mahoney also trained horses, and wrote poetry. The 1978 film Hooper with Brian Keith as 'Jocko' is a tribute to him. |
