The TV broadcasting of science fiction, fantasy, and horror films gained even more momentum. Northern Californians, for example, had their own TV host, Bob Wilkins, who worked out of Oakland's channel 2, KTVU. Without any weird makeup, Bob managed to become an icon for his laid back, honest, and funny assessments of the movies he showed. If he thought a movie was crud, he told you. Another indication of the growing popularity of these genres was that Dr. Donald A.Reed transformed the Count Dracula Society into the still active Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films. William Shatner (Captain Kirk of Star Trek) hosted the first two televised events in the 1970s, which led to the esteemed Saturn Awards.
