JOURNAL OF MODERN MYTHOLOGY AND POP CULTURE INTRODUCTION PAGE 8

MORGAN LE FAY

Illustration by Howard Pyle, from the 1903 Scribner's edition of The Story of King Arthur and His Knights.

Powerful magician and half-sister of King Arthur, inspiration for this Super-Human character seems to have come from early Welsh mythology and literature. In Geoffrey of Monmouth's Vita Merlini, 1150, Morgan le Fay appears by name. Her plan to overthrow Arthur results in her banishment from court. Morgan studies magic under Merlin, plotting against Guinevere, and uses her magical powers against Arthur and his knights. In Marion Zimmer Bradley's novel The Mists of Avalon, Morgaine's struggle to preserve her pagan religion is at the core of her conflict with Arthur.
