JOURNAL OF MODERN MYTHOLOGY AND POP CULTURE INTRODUCTION PAGE 79
One of the co-founders of the National Farm Workers Association, later, the United Farm Workers, Cesar Estrada Chavez was born March 31, 1927. Chavez became an organizer for the Community Services Organization (CSO), a Latino civil rights group, in 1952. He traveled through California in support of Mexican-American workers' rights, speaking on the importance of voting. Chavez was also a vegan and advocate of animal rights. "Racism," he said, "economic deprival, dog fighting and cock fighting, bullfighting and rodeos are all cut from the same defective fabric: violence."
Left: Cesar Chavez. Right: Dolores Huerta, May 16, 1976.
Born April 10, 1930, Dolores Huerta was co-founder and first Vice President Emeritus of the United Farm Workers of America. She co-founded the Sacramento chapter of the Community Service Organization in 1955, and the Agricultural Workers Association in 1960. In 1962 she and Cesar Chavez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers. Like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr., Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez dedicated their lives to many progressive activities during a tumultuous time in our country; their elevated status in our pop culture helps to remind us of these times and issues.
