WONDER WOMAN

Return of the Goddess.

During World War II, Army intelligence officer Steve Trevor crash-lands his plane on Themyscira (also known as Paradise Island), home of the Amazons. The Princess Diana nurses Trevor back to health. The Goddess Aphrodite decrees that a warrior must travel to the outer world and help in the fight against the Nazis, so a tournament is set up to decide who will be the champion. Diana wins the tournament and becomes Wonder Woman. Diana and Steve Trevor travel to the outside world, Diana assuming the identity of Lt. Diana Prince. A creation of married couple William Moulton Marston and Elizabeth Holloway Marston, Wonder Woman's introduction was in All Star Comics #8, 1941. Sherrie A. Inness, editor of Action Chicks. New Images of Tough Women in Popular Culture, quotes Jennifer Steinhauer's November 5, 2000 New York Times article Pow! Slam! Thank You, Ma'am: "Physically strong and supernaturally enhanced women have a long history in American pop culture: think back to Rosie the Riveter and Wonder Woman."
