DOC SAVAGE, Continued.

Left: Bantam Books cover from the 1960s; art by Mort Kunstler. Right: Dark Horse Comics; cover art Gary Gianni, 1995.

A possible inspiration for the creation of Doc may have been writer Phillip Wylie, who published a science fiction novel in 1930 titled, Gladiator. In it, Abednego Danner creates a Super-Human son, Hugo, through the invention of a super-serum. Doc is also an amalgam of Sherlock Holmes (Doc has five Watsons), and Tarzan of the Apes (the Super-Human, intellectual 'savage'). The basic concept, created by Street and Smith executive Henry Ralston and Editor John Nanovic, was meant to further capitalize on the success of their other pulp hero magazine, The Shadow. It was Lester Dent who brought life to Doc and his five friends.
