JOURNAL OF MODERN MYTHOLOGY AND POP CULTURE INTRODUCTION PAGE 43

DR. FU MANCHU, Continued.

Left: The Crime Club (1936) first American edition. Right: Christopher Lee as Fu Manchu, 1967.

This blending of fictional characters with real persons and events is one of the hallmarks of Modern Mythology. In the 1936 novel President Fu Manchu, Nayland Smith fights to halt Fu Manchu's 'League of Good Americans,' a plot to create a fascist presidency on the United States. Fu Manchu is one of the earliest examples of a Super-Villain, with Sherlock Holmes's antagonist Professor Moriarty, and Count Dracula being among other precedents. For over ninety years, he has appeared in movies, radio, TV, comic strips, comic books, and new novels written by various authors.
