JOURNAL OF MODERN MYTHOLOGY AND POP CULTURE INTRODUCTION PAGE 42
The reinstatement of Myth and Pop Culture as a central focus in modern life has a second boost by the creation of seven other fabulous characters. Augmenting the Big Six are:
Left: Teaser from the first US edition of The Insidious Dr. Fu-Manchu. New York; McBride, Nast & Co., September 1913. See The Page of Fu Manchu for a detailed web-site on this character. Right: The great Boris Karloff as the evil one, in the 1932 MGM film The Mask of Fu Manchu.
,Master criminal Dr. Fu Manchu appeared in 1912, and was the creation of Sax Rohmer (Arthur Henry Sarsfield), a prolific English writer. In the early stories, the tireless efforts of Scotland Yard inspector Nayland Smith and Dr. Petrie (a Holmes/Watson duo) thwart Fu Manchu's worldwide conspiracy. Dr. Fu Manchu experiments for decades on creating an elixir that extends his lifespan, enabling him to participate in the direction of world politics. Rohmer's 1933 novel The Bride of Fu Manchu, has the evil Doctor commenting: "The imprint of my hand is upon the nations, Mussolini so far has eluded me; but President Hoover, who stood in my path, makes way for Franklin Roosevelt."
