JOURNAL OF MODERN MYTHOLOGY AND POP CULTURE INTRODUCTION PAGE 38
Left: The first Tarzan movie, Tarzan of the Apes, 1918, with Elmo Lincoln grieving at the body of his slain foster mother. Right: Tarzan and Jane riding a species of Triceratops called a gryf. Illustration by Motoichiro Takebe from ERB's novel Tarzan the Terrible.
The Ape-Man's first appearance was in the October 1912 issue of All-Story Magazine. In 1914 A. C. McClurg published Tarzan of the Apes in book form. There are twenty-five Tarzan books; there is also a twenty-sixth, a fragment ERB left before his death and completed years later by Joe Lansdale. Tarzan of the Apes arrived upon the world scene as strides in science lead to a super-media and easy access to archetypes even during times of war, economic depression, cultural upheavals, and the absence of television.
