The practice of geoforensics, according to expert Dr. Ray Murray, was created by Doyle thirty years before official application, and the use of geology and other evidence began with Sherlock Holmes. In tribute for contributions to forensic investigation, Sherlock Holmes is the only fictional character to be inducted as an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. His influence on all subsequent mystery forms since 1887 is immeasurable. Max Allan Collins, in his book The History of Mystery, comments: "And, whether battling a poisonous snake in The Adventure of the Speckled Band, or wrestling atop Reichenback Falls with his nemesis Dr. Moriarty in The Final Problem, Holmes is the clear precursor of not just cerebral detectives, but the two-fisted hardboiled dicks."
