THE BIG SIX #3: ALICE IN WONDERLAND, Continued.

Left: Seven-year old Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Alice, photographed by Charles (Lewis Carroll) Dodgson in 1860. Right: Arthur Rackham illustration.

The influence of Alice-as-Archetype extends to various genres and themes, and the plucky girl who kept her composure while navigating through a weird world can be traced to later characters, such as, Mrs. Emma Peel of The Avengers, Modesty Blaise, and Dorothy of Wizard of Oz. James Joyce's Finnegans Wake contains many Alice allusions, including: "...Wondelawn's lost us for ever. Alis, alas, she broke the glass!" The Riverworld series of science fiction books by Philip Jose Farmer features Alice Liddell (Alice's prototype) as a main character.
