Of the many authors influenced by Poe's works, the list includes: Herman Melville, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Oscar Wilde, Walt Whitman, William Faulkner, Nathanael West, H. P. Lovecraft, Charles Baudelaire, Jorge Luis Borges, and Stephen King. Poe's influence and popularity is worldwide. Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle once remarked, "Where was the detective story until Poe breathed the breath of life into it?" Science Fiction writers Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, and Ray Bradbury also professed their debt to Poe's genius.
