Poet, short story writer, literary critic, Poe, born in Boston, Massachusetts, is one of the most important American authors of the 19th century. He transformed the short story to an art, created the modern form of detective and crime stories, and pioneered science fiction and the psychological thriller. Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, considered a milestone in the history of American literature, appeared in two volumes in 1839. This collection featured tales such as The Fall of the House of Usher, William Wilson, and Ligeia. On January 29, 1845, the Evening Mirror published his famous poem The Raven, and it became a public sensation.
