The transformation from an exclusive pantheon of Gods to an explosion of Half-Gods, Super-Humans, and Super-Heroes in the media was thousands of years in the making. The Gods of the ancient Greeks, for example, were individual deities making individual decisions and intervening in human events for their own ends, as if playing chess on a grand, earthly scale. Natural occurrences such as storms, lightning, floods and earthquakes were attributed to them, these controllers of every aspect of human life. With ancient Egyptians, also, was the belief that certain Gods were aspects of a greater God. Any way you had it, humans sometimes took the brunt of the volatile temperaments of these Immortals.
