THREE MUSKETEERS/JANE EYRE

Left: Dumas's Three Musketeers, illustrated by Maurice Leloir, 1894 Appleton edition. Right: Early Comic Book adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's novel.

Jason and the Argonauts is a myth from thousands of years ago about a group of great heroes and adventurers on a quest for the Golden Fleece. Alexandre Dumas's The Three Musketeers (1844) represents a popular nineteenth-century example of this archetype that would later develop into concepts such as Justice League of America, The Fantastic Four, and The A-Team. Charlotte Bronte's own experiences as an orphan raised in a boarding school were used for the character of Jane Eyre (1847); experience used as mythology for therapy. Both The Three Musketeers, and Jane Eyre, however dissimilar, address concerns over issues of their day: politics, inheritance, relationships, and social class. The human hero must combat these dragons.
