MUSEUM OF MODERN MYTHOLOGY AND POP CULTURE |
SHERLOCK HOLMES 1887. Arguably the greatest hero of all time, Sherlock Holmes first appeared in the pages of Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887. The world's first consulting detective was the creation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), and is one of the six key figures in the development of Modern Mythology, Pop Culture, and Super Heroes. The influence of Holmes on all mystery, suspense, thriller forms since 1887 is immeasurable, and overflows into other genres. Doyle's depiction of Victorian England from all classes of society, the abuses of power by the privileged class, and the plight of women in a male dominated society are a few of the issues recurring in the stories. It has been estimated that Sherlock Holmes has been in more movies than any other character. |
