GORDON SCOTT 1927-2007. Ex-drill instructor, MP, lifeguard, and the movies' eleventh Tarzan, Gordon M. Werschkul was born in Portland, Oregon. Gordon became a lifeguard in 1953, and Hollywood agents staying at the Sahara Hotel were impressed by his muscular build and 19-inch biceps. Renamed Gordon Scott, the ex-DI became the newest motion picture Tarzan. Three Ape-Man features followed, and a pilot for a proposed TV series. But based on Gordon's last two Tarzan films, many critics and fans, especially Baby-Boomers, consider him the best of the movie Tarzans, not Johnny Weissmuller. The controversy rages on. Gordon quit the Tarzan series, and took up the offer to work in films in Italy and other European countries. He played characters as diverse as Zorro, Buffalo Bill, and Hercules. |
