MUSEUM OF MODERN MYTHOLOGY AND POP CULTURE |
FRANKENSTEIN 1818. Published anonymously in London, Mary Shelley's novel shocked readers of the day. The story of the scientist who creates, and then abandons a man made out of the parts of dead bodies continues into the 21st. Century as allegory and metaphor. Mary Shelley's name appeared in the revised third edition of the book, and it was in the introduction to this edition that Mary designated the type of literature Frankenstein represented as different from the fantasy/supernatural genre. The term Science Fiction had yet to be invented. Frankenstein is one of the most widespread and important myths in history, relevant to a multitude of human concerns and changes in society. |
