TRUCKEE BOOK & BEAN
And the MUSEUM OF MODERN MYTHOLOGY & POP CULTURE
PRESENT:
PAST EVENTS:
Edgar Allan Poe: 201st Birthday Celebration.
The October Country Celebration. A month-long celebration of Halloween, Science Fiction and Fantasy.
CONTINUE ON FOR THE APRIL 17th, 2010 SPRING GLEAMING ROCK-OUT AT TRUCKEE BOOK & BEAN.
The performers arrived at Truckee Book and Bean around 8:PM, slowly setting things up.
Aaron Oropeza and Megan Lacy at the bar, so to speak, the coffee-bar, before the show. Who's on first?
The bookshelves are on wheels, making room for performers and audience to connect before and during a song.
Aaron Oropeza and Joe Mager make last minute sound checks. The order of events has been set.
With Joe still doing sound adjustments, Aaron leads into his first song with a little patter, and a lot of talent.
From a musician's bag of tricks.
A watcher in the shadows, taking in Aaron's blend of rock and blues.
Aaron did some new songs, and an old one he wasn't going to do but did, anyway.
Aaron's music charms you, and then slices through life to a core that exists in us all. Music is the universal language.
Kriston Pator dazzled us with guitar moods and shifting rhythmic splashes of rock/blues.
Kriston's non-vocal performance ended with an explosion of base energy, a cacophony of thought blended into music.
Megan Lacy was on next, her dexterous singing and guitar playing more than matching the moods and temperaments of her songs.
Megan has her own bag of tricks.
Megan belts it out, her guitar speaking with assured, story telling tones...
Joe Mager was the last performer of the evening. Joe and Bryony and their daughter, Olive, are moving back east in May, so this will be Joe's last gig here in Truckee, at least, for a while.
With apologies for the lack of better pictures, because Joe did a slam-bang set that had the audience reeling. His last gig here zoomed into life from the beginning, and literally brought down the house with applause.
We all send our love and hopes to Joe, Bryony, and Olive; thanks for the friendship, and Joe, thanks for your great music.
CONTINUE ON FOR THE APRIL 10th, 2010 OHLIGANS, SUMMER McCALL, AND COMPANY ROCK-OUT AT TRUCKEE BOOK & BEAN.
To get to the venue, we had to go south on Brockway Road, and then take the right here...
...around the corner of the building to Riverside Drive.
Our destination, a past host of many cultural events over the years, as Truckee's Underground bookstore and coffee shop.
Through the window, we can see Anders taking a break from setting up the musical equipment. Summer McCall, in the background, is already mentally preparing herself for the performance to come.
There were at least six musicians involved, on and off, throughout the night, but the scramble before show-time went off well.
Ohligans led off the show, with Ander's incessant percussion and electronic background allowing for Eric's improvisations, yet keeping each performance focused.
Summer McCall cuts loose with her cello; she also plays violin and ukulele. Her mother is also a musician.
Summer was all business for this gig, standing out in a group of outstanding musicians. She and Eric did a few cello-guitar duets, and Summer also sang.
Taking a break from the entertainment, people could choose from the menu offered by Truckee Book and Bean, and the bake-sale by the front counter.
Truckee Book and Bean employee (and performer) Dre, put on this bake-sale for a bookstore in Seattle (where she had worked) having difficulties because of the renovation of their building. The Mexican fudge was especially good.
The music, by labyrinth paths, starts up again; Anders fuses the improvisational byways provided by Eric within his own framework of beat at its own timing and rhythm, his electronic background setting a pace and parameter.
Ohligans; Anders, Eric, and Dre rockin' out.
Anders set the beat of the evening, sweeping the audience along with him...
