EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS

1875-1950. Born in Chicago, author Edgar Rice Burroughs is considered the "grandfather of American science fiction." His first story, Under the Moons of Mars, was published in All-Story magazine in 1912. Tarzan of the Apes, also published in All-Story, in October of 1912, was an instant, enormous success (see separate Tarzan section in Museum Index). Burroughs wrote two dozen Tarzan tales. He also wrote a series of novels about the adventures of John Carter (an earth-man transported to Mars), a series taking place on Venus, and a fourth series set in the center of the earth. Other novels include titles such as: The Monster Men; The Land That Time Forgot; The Moon Maid; The Mucker; The Outlaw of Torn; and I Am A Barbarian.
