EDWARD G. ROBINSON

1893-1973. Emanuel Goldenberg, born in Bucharest, Romania to a Yiddish speaking Jewish family, arrived in the USA at the age of ten. Emanuel studied acting while in College, earned a scholarship from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and in 1913 began stage work with his new name, Edward G. Robinson. His film debut was the 1923 production The Bright Shawl. In 1931 his performance as the ruthless gangster in Little Caesar made him a film star. In reality, Eddie was an educated, refined man who collected art; "I have not collected art. Art collected me. I never found paintings. They found me. I have never even owned a work of art. They owned me." Edward G. Robinson was awarded a special Oscar in 1973. Despite his fame, he was never comfortable with his stage name, and always thought of himself as Emanuel Goldenberg.
