DOROTHY LAMOUR

1914-1996. Dorothy Lamour was born Mary Leta Dorothy Slaton in New Orleans. In 1931 she won the Miss New Orleans beauty contest. She sang with the Herbie Kay band, before having a weekly musical radio program on NBC Radio in 1935. Dorothy Lamour moved to Hollywood in 1936, and appeared as the star of Jungle Princess. Her film trademark became a sarong, which she wore in that film. This exotic beauty was the object of a feud between Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in a series of 'Road' films, from 1940's Road to Singapore to 1952's Road to Bali. During World War II, Dorothy volunteered her services for the war effort, entertaining troops. She is also credited with a sharp business mind, helping to create the War Bond Tours, selling over $21 million dollars in War Bonds, herself.
