DOC HOLLIDAY 1851-1887. The dentist who became a fearsome gambler and gunfighter, John Henry Holliday was born in Griffin, Georgia. There is controversy over whether he had to leave his home over the murder of a black man who wanted to share a swimming hole used by the local white people. Because of a bad case of tuberculosis, Doc became unable to earn a living as a dentist and became a professional gambler. Forming an alliance with the Earp brothers, Doc took part in the gunfight near the O. K. Corral and the subsequent violence over the shootings of Virgil and Morgan Earp. Doc's illness worsened, and he ended his days in the Hotel Glenwood of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Doc's life became the 'stuff of legend' during his lifetime, whereas, the Earps attained their prominence in American Pop Culture after the death of Wyatt in 1929, and the publication of Stuart Lake's book Wyatt Earp, Frontier Marshal. |
