DAVID CROCKETT

1786-1836. The first great American Multi-Media Superstar. David was a Tennessee backwoods bear hunter, pioneer, and politician who defied the most popular president of the United States, at that time, over Indian rights. Congressman Crockett called the gathering of the Congress "liars and cheats" to their collective faces. He then told his constituency (many who had been bribed to vote him out of office) to go to hell, and took off to Texas to develop some land, make a bid for a fourth term in Congress, and then run for President. He was killed instead at the battle of the Alamo. Crockett's gigantic fame in the 19th Century is more amazing when the lack of radio, TV, and movies are taken into consideration.
