BELA LUGOSI

1882-1956. Be'la Ferenc Dezso Blasko was born in Lugos, Hungary. Bela appeared in a variety of stage roles, and toured with the National Theater of Budapest. Although Dracula (1931) has always been considered Bela's finest film role, more contemporary critiques cite others as their candidate for this great actor's best screen performance: the zombie master of White Zombie (1932); Dr. Vitus Werdegast in The Black Cat (1934); the one-armed sailor who saves the woman in Mystery of the Marie Celeste ("Phantom Ship") 1935; Dr. Benet, the hero of The Invisible Ray (1936); Commissar Razinin in Ninotchaka (1939); Ygor, the demented blacksmith (not Shepard) in 1939's Son of Frankenstein; Joseph, the Portuguese immigrant of Robert Wise's The Body Snatcher (1945).
